The 988 Awareness Project Receives $10,000 Grant from Vegas Golden Knights Alumni Association

Deryk Engelland, former star Vegas Golden Knights hockey player and founder of the Vegas Golden Knights Alumni Association, along with Robert Novotny, an executive with the Vegas Golden Knights Alumni Association, visited Bishop Gorman on August 31, 2023, to present the 988 Awareness Project with a $10,000 check to support its mission of promoting awareness of the abbreviated 3-digit 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, with a focus on teens and military veterans. In presenting the check Novotny said, “This past year in the United States saw the highest number [of suicides] ever…and if we get one person to change their mind and stay in the game, and give them resources, then it is win.”  The 988 Awareness Project is so appreciative of the grant and is thrilled to put this grant to good work in the community to continue to raise awareness of the 988 Lifeline. As a reminder, anyone in the United States can either call or text 988 for either themselves or someone they are worried about. The 988 Lifeline offers trained crisis counselors that are available 24 hours a day, 7-days a week for those with any kind of emotional or mental health-related distress, including thoughts of suicide or a substance use crisis. The hope is that one day the number 988 will be as recognizable and as easy-to-remember as 911.
