The 988 Awareness Project Joins AFSP as a Community Sponsor at the 2025 San Diego Out of the Darkness Walk

The 988 Awareness Project was honored to serve as a community sponsor at the 2025 San Diego Out of the Darkness Walk, held at Liberty Station on Sunday, October 19. The event brought together more than 1,500 participants and raised over $245,000 to support those affected by suicide. Together, we helped raise awareness, vital funds, and shared the powerful message that suicide can be prevented and no one is alone.

988 President and Chair, Liam Kaseburg, managed the sponsor table and distributed over 300 embroidered 988 beanies, 988 magnets, and information cards containing essential mental health resources. Liam connected with partner organizations and welcomed new teen volunteers eager to advance our mission of promoting suicide prevention and mental health awareness.

Out of the Darkness Walks take place annually in over 400 communities nationwide, working to break the stigma surrounding mental health, support survivors, honor lives lost, and remind everyone that help is always within reach.

Since its founding in 1987, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) has grown from a grassroots network into a national leader in mental health advocacy, with chapters in all 50 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico. AFSP is the largest private funder of suicide prevention research and a trusted provider of evidence-based education and community programs that reach millions each year.
